All In Bible Study - Day 1

Stone Cold Steve Austin

Recently, A&E did a Biography on Stone Cold Steve Austin. In the mid 90's, he went by several different stage names including Stunning Steve Austin, was a part of a tag team called the Hollywood Blonds, and also went by the name of the Ringmaster. But Steve felt he needed to reinvent himself to become a bigger name in the wrestling world. One day his wife at the time served him hot tea and said you better drink it before it gets "stone cold." And that was the beginning of Stone Cold Steve Austin, a persona that embodied beer-drinking, the middle finger, and a bad attitude towards the man. He convinced the WWE producers, including Vince McMahon, that this persona and attitude would change the entire wrestling world, and it did. In 2019, Sports Illustrated said that if there was a Mt. Rushmore of Professional Wrestling, Stone Cold Steve Austin would be on it.

Professional wrestlers get to define who they are and invent their own persona. Loyal fans love it, buy the t shirt, and believe every part of it to be true.

As cool as that would be, You and I don't get to invent the persona of God. We don't get to create a character of who we think God should be.

AW Tozer said "what comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us." Deep down inside of you, what you believe about God shapes the entire course of your life.

On display in the Smithsonian is Thomas Jefferson's bible. Unlike my Bible and yours, Jefferson famously cut out parts of the Bible that he didn't agree with. How convenient right?

As JD Graer says, "you don't get your own personal Jesus." This isn't burger King you cannot have it your way. When God appeared to Moses, he said I am that I am. He didn't say I am whoever you want me to be.

As men, we're very good at coming to an understanding of God that is convenient for us. He's there when we need Him, but He looks the other way when we are given to our sins. I'll worship him at church on Christmas, Easter, and any other convenient Sunday when we don't have other things going on.

But this idea of creating our own image of God is not new. In the Old Testament, Moses was on Mt. Sinai and the Israelites convinced Aaron that it was a good idea to "create their own god" by melting down their gold and forming a statue of a Golden Calf. They worshipped the god of their creation and threw a big party!

In John 14:6 Jesus said "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

Guys, the only way to truly know God is to study the Bible.  He is the God of the scriptures and we must read it and come to Him on His Terms. Despite what our culture says, there is an absolute standard of truth and it's God's word.

What aspects of God have you created in your own mind? What sins have you determined in your mind are OK and don't really bother God? Then spend 5 minutes reading the Bible. A great place to start understanding the God of the Bible is John Chapter 1. And finally, spend 5 minutes in prayer just talking to the God of the Universe.

Be strong and courageous, stand firm in the faith, and have a great day.
